Continuation of #324 from January 1, 2015

Sitting in the passenger seat of a car again was freaking me out.  After only being able to walk or maybe hitch a ride on the back of an animal-drawn cart, the speed at which the scenery was streaking by was alarming.  Without wanting to, I was clutching the "ohshit" handle and my legs were stiff in front of me.  The smell, too.  It reeked in here, though I know I reeked to Richard.  I smelled like animal, but the car smelled like chemicals and it burned my sensitized nose.

Do you support euthanasia?

I woke up in the middle of the night to growling bowels.  This was when I learned that growling bowels in the middle of the night is a sign.  A terrible sign.  I got to the bathroom and couldn't decide which end to put over the toilet first.  My head won and my underwear lost.

Wasn't I empty yet?  How could there be more?  The consistency and color changed, but it didn't stop the heaving and churning.  I lost a concept of time, knowing only my traitorous body.  When I finished heaving, I would kneel before the sink and rinse my burning mouth.  Eventually, I couldn't get up high enough to reach the water taps.  I no longer cared about the cleanliness of the bathroom floor, the toilet or myself.  I wanted the agony of my quivering digestive system to end, and I didn't care how.

My head lay on the curved carpet that hugged the front of the toilet.  I made bargains in my head.  Please don't let me throw up again.  Please calm down.  Please don't open me up and flush me out again.  If I hold really, really still, will you stop?

24 hour flu.  One day of my life.  I lay there, shaking my head slowly from side to side, willing my body to obey, but my thoughts were detached, too.  If I had to feel like this all the time, like a cancer patient in treatment, could I make it?  Would I want to?  My frightened, honest voice said I would rather die than feel like this.

On the cover of what magazine would you most like to appear?

It was a candid shot, taken out of disbelief.  A girl--possibly a lady--being assaulted on the street.  It was dark and still wet from earlier rain.  I was hurrying back to my apartment from photographing wet pavement on the neon-lit streets three blocks over.  Pretentious and hack.  Maybe worthy of stock photo work.  I had my camera around my neck, like an idiot in this bad neighborhood.  I heard her scream, cut off.  I saw them clearly.  Woman and man.  Man wrapped around woman from behind, her feet losing the ground for a moment.  His hand blocking her air.  I lifted my camera and started snapping.

Pageant Question: Which is more important, friendship or personal success?

If I were you.

If I were you, I wouldn't be you.

If I were you, my life wouldn't be your life.  If you were me, my life would not be mine.

Differences in our situations make our lives different, but differences in us would change all outcomes.

If I were you, I would save my money and get my passport.

If I were you, I would sign up as a volunteer in a foreign land.

If I were you, I would teach English across the sea.

If I were you, I would live light.

If I were you, I would be free.

That you are different means that you have no money, nor passport.  Your life is heavy.  You are not free.

I am not you, but I wish you could be light and free and happy.

While still being you.

Pageant Question: Who do you think will be the first woman to become president? Why?

I remember learning in Ancient History that when faced with the first knowledge of what they called "alien" life, Earthlings went to war with each other.  Leaky, I know, but that's what they did!  War used to happen a lot on Earth, and the reasons were both complex and animalistic.  Earthlings didn't like change, and they were intensely self-absorbed.  Individual Earthlings were self-absorbed, and their increasingly larger tribes were self-absorbed.  They had family tribes and community tribes and religious tribes and belief tribes and national tribes not to mention a starload of sub-tribes.  The change that came from the "aliens" shook up all those tribes.  It's ridiculous to think how many they killed while fighting change.  The word "eventually" is a horrible way to skip over those decades of death, but eventually Earthlings created a panel able to handle their new, galactic world.

Pageant Question 25: If you were given ten dollars, what would you do with it?

Perspective, thought Gabe, picking through a recycling bin.  It's all about perspective.  He pulled out one last returnable liter bottle and dropped it in his bag, being careful to lower the lid of the recycling bin quietly.  He didn't want the cops to chase him away again because next time, they might not be so friendly.  Perspective again.  Gabe thought about how he used to hear sirens and bask in the security of his warm home and silently thank the security forces that kept him safe from all the junkies and drunks outside.  Perspective.

Back in the day, Gabe never even returned his own bottles.  Hoisting the nearly-full garbage bag over his shoulder, he cursed his past self for wastefulness and cursed himself again for wallowing in what he couldn't change.  Change was what his life was about now, wasn't it?  Change from what it was and what had been pocket change that now meant food or the special treat of a cup of coffee.  He used to have a pot of imported coffee every morning, ground and brewed just for him.  Gabe balanced himself on his bike, one bag of cans and bottles perched sideways across the handlebars and the other he held with his left hand, balanced on the narrow, improvised platform on the back, and began the treacherous ride to the bottle return.  When both bags were full, he could guarantee at least ten bucks as long as there weren't too many of those liter bottles.  Ten bucks.  I'm rich, he thought, and, surprising himself, he meant it.  Perspective.

There was no way I could understand what life was like for them, even though I had been shunted to the same segregary.  People outside called it Seg 5, but those inside just called it "Five."  I had been inside more than I had been outside, but I would never quite be a part of Five.  Five was for Denati, and I would always be Human.

Most people think that when you lose everything, it goes in a blink, but "everything" encompasses so much, it takes a while to finally get to nothing.  You keep redefining "everything" and "nothing" as you lose what you have.  Taking the bus is better for the environment.  Well, my job wasn't everything.  The house was starting to get to be too much anyway and apartments are low maintenance.  We're saving money by not having a pet.  And by not being able to bury him properly.  Hey, this generic food from Save-a-Lot is just like the food we used to buy at Trader Joe's!  Hey, these food pantries get the same food we used to get!  Hey, this shelter serves some good meals.  I could stand to lose a few pounds anyway, so skipping a meal or two won't kill me.  I don't need more clothes than I can wear at one time.  At least we have each other.

When I want to make myself feel dizzy, I picture myself, feet not just on earth, but on the Earth.  I imagine myself being held to the Earth as it spins.  Then, like one of those videos from Cosmos, I pan out and up from me.  I am tiny on the Earth.  The Earth is tiny.  The solar system is tiny.  The Milky Way is tiny.  I am here, yet I am nothing.

That's when I start to feel dizzy and the pile of dishes and messages to answer seem... tiny.

They say you can never go home again, and I never believed them.  I thought you couldn't go home only when the place had been plowed under, like my place eventually was, but I couldn't go home a long time before that.  Home had changed.  Okay, I suppose I had, too, but not as much as home had.  I wanted the avocado green carpets.  I wanted the harvest gold appliances.  I wanted the nubby black sofa with the square arms and the squashy throw pillows.  I wanted it to smell like dog.  I wanted the rotary phone to ring and ring and ring.  I wanted it to be the home I remembered, but it wasn't.  It changed, but I wanted it to be the same.

Though the aisles were wide enough for the forklift, the metal and wood shelves loaded with merchandise still loomed overhead.  Long corridors of high-priced kitchen accessories filled the warehouse.  The cement floors were smooth and cold.

Orders came from fancy catalogs and, of course, from SkyMall.  People who flew on business trips or, perhaps, to exotic places, and just couldn't wait to land before shopping ordered $80 cutting boards and $250 toaster ovens.  Warehouse pickers took list after list of purchases and plucked them from the mighty shelves to pile onto conveyor belts that rolled to the packers who boxed up the hundreds of dollars worth of merchandise for a far away customer who had already forgotten what he ordered the last time he flew back from Tokyo.

In an impossible world filled with impossible things, sometimes the most plausible are the least believable.  A cry for help is quite plausible, especially in a bad neighborhood, where, impossibly, people hurt each other for no other reason than they feel they must.  It is plausible someone needs help, but it doesn't sound believable and no one comes.  No one helps.  The hurt continues.

It is also plausible that the choosing of the victim is random, but the victim is more willing to believe that he or she was targeted and, even more impossibly, will always be targeted and will be attacked again and again.

The impossible is possible.  Famous people are more boring than you'd think.  Every living thing with a brain has doubts.  Shay curled, shivering, under her blanket and thought about all she'd learned the past few months.  Death is always near.  Most people are just going through the motions.  The impossible is possible.  She kept going back to the most uplifting and frightening revelation.  The grate began to vibrate.  Shay held her blanket down on all corners to keep in the warm gust that always followed when a train was coming into the station below.  The impossible is possible.  The impossible is possible.

The moon rose over the canyon wall, big and white and clear.  The rocks were still warm, but the air had been gathering a chill.  It was still, cloudless, the stars stretching out to forever and the start of the universe.  Cabe lay dying in his sleeping bag.  He had maneuvered himself so the fire was behind him and his head propped up on one of the low, warm rocks.  The additional heat from the fire warmed the top of his wispy-haired head.  Cabe shivered and stared at the moon, trying to gain perspective on his place in the world before he was gone from it.

It's a bad thing when your perspective changes.  It messes with everything you know, and it really makes you think in a way you didn't want to think.  For a while, I was seeing everything as if I were a movie camera.  That was bad.  My arms were coming out and I could see them in front of me, typing on the keyboard, but they were the arms of an actor.  I'd be eating lunch and it was as if the actor's arms were picking up the sandwich and holding it close to the camera lens.  My arms belonged to some poor Hollywood wannabe who had to crouch under a hulking movie camera on a set in a giant studio and pretend to work and eat while my eyes were simply recording what went on and only moved when the director wanted to focus on something else.  Like I said, that was bad.

It is quite amazing how your priorities change when money has no importance any longer.  When property has no meaning.  When making sure you have food and water and a safe place to sleep are your main concern, that is, when Death is not standing right in front of you.  When Death blocks the sidewalk, even food, water and safe sleeping arrangements don't matter.

Cara was living inside of time, right down to the moment, which is much smaller than even a single second.  Most people live in tomorrows though that is an impossible illusion.  Cara preferred living right in the dirt.  In the dirt under her nails.  In the smudges in her fingerprint whorls.  In the molecules that were absorbed into her cells.

They say that the mirror never lies.  Unfortunately, you have to look in a mirror with your eyes, which are notorious fibbers.

It was such a small thing, just a glance, and it wouldn't have even been noticed if she hadn't looked up at the precise moment.  In her better days, Jess wouldn't have given it thought, but recently she had become hyper-sensitive to looks from strangers.  The face that Jess saw was disdainful.  Dismissive.  Disgusted.  The more she thought about that face, the more horrible the look became in her memory.  It told her she was unworthy and an affront to the senses.  Worse than an animal that could at least be pitied.
